New American Women’s Forum of New York is an association of women living in Jamaica, New York. Formed in 2014, the organization – run primarily by Bangladeshi women – works for the betterment of all immigrant women and their rights. It was founded by Morshed Alam, who is an adviser of the organization. New American Women’s Forum of New York encourages women, specially Bangladeshi women, to be active in local politics by participating in voting process, attending public meetings, presenting women’s issue to the local elected officials, etc. At present the group is active in Jamaica where a significant number of Bangladeshis reside.
Activities of New American Women’s Forum of New York include
- observe Bangladeshi national and cultural events
- maintain liaison with elected public officials
- organize meeting with local community activists
- work with political candidates to promote Bangladeshi women’s interest
- help with voter registration, phone bank and campaign
- collaborate with organization of other ethnic communities
The forum is closely associate with New American Democratic Club and New American Youth Forum.
