Bangladesh Medical Association UK

Bangladesh Medical Association UK (BMAUK) is a professional organization of physicians/doctors of Bangladeshi origin in the United Kingdom. The association was formed during the movement to create the independent state of Bangladesh in March 1971 in London. An office was established at Camden, North London. The association’s contribution to Bangladesh’s independence movement was substantial. The association was incorporated under the Companies Act 1985 as a private company in July 1985.

Annual Dinner

This is a formal annual event when the organization takes the opportunity to invite dignitaries from the other medical professions and allied bodies like Royal Medical Colleges, The General Medical Council and British Medical Association, High Commissioner of Bangladesh & Members of Her Majesty’s Govt.

Annual Reunion

It is an annual weekend event. It provides a delightful family gathering where friends and colleagues can find new friends and meet their old ones. It gives educational opportunities through various PFEA meetings. It is an enjoyable event to offer the members entertaining programs like Bengali Drama, musical events, and multiple performances. Overall it’s a pleasant occasion lasting for three days.

Mentoring, Counseling, and Support

This role is fulfilled by some senior members of the association, who regularly provide honorary clinical attachments in hospitals for newly arrived doctors before and after PLAB tests. The association helps by putting them on the right track for initial jobs and, at the same time, being available for future support. BDMA considered and provided financial support to some members and non-members for the PLAB test.

Charitable Activities

The association also raises and donates money to different organizations in Bangladesh. It supplies books, journals, and equipment to medical colleges in Bangladesh. It also gives financial support to hospitals in Bangladesh. It always comes forward to help the general population in Bangladesh during any natural calamities.

Notable Achievements of BDMAUK

– Had the privilege of being a Trustee of the Bangladesh Center, our National Heritage, in the UK by contributing large sums of money to its purchase
– Organized one-day conference/seminar for emergency medicine in Dhaka and two days international congress at Dhaka and Health Camp at Sarishabari, Mymensingh, Bangladesh 2008
– Elected its first member to the General Medical Council in 1994 and second member in 1999
– Donated huge sums of money to the Health Secretary of newly independent Bangladesh in 1973
– Organized International Congress and health Camp in Bangladesh in 2002 and 2007
– Contributed money to build an orphanage in the Sidr-affected area called Bagbaria, Pirozpur, Bangladesh.
