Sunderland Bangladesh International Centre (previously known as Sunderland Bangladeshi Community Centre) was founded as a charity in 1999 to address various social and educational needs of the local Bangladeshi community. With a focus to Bangladeshi community, the centre provides a range of activities to all sections of the local community. It is a friendly vibrant and inclusive centre which is open to all of the community. The aim of the Sunderland Bangladesh International Centre is to provide a safe, secure, well managed, attractive and convenient meeting place for the Bangladeshi and wider local community in Hendon to meet and engage in multicultural activities.

Learning Disability Project
The aim of project is to offers help, information, guidance and direct support to individuals and their families with learning and physical disabilities. The purpose of the project is to ensure increased opportunities for community members who have disabilities and their families to get health care, social care and welfare benefits and plan support services that are designed around their individual needs and circumstances.
The project offers a specialist service that takes account of the background, first language, religion, and culture of the service user. In particular the project adopts a person centered approach to planning. This means that the person with a learning or physical disability is helped to plan the type of services and support they need to be more independent and access their community. The planning of services should meet the needs which are identified during the assessment. Sometimes plans need to be changed as needs change.
Women’s Employment Project
Women of the World (WOW) is a group of women who meet regularly at the centre for training courses, social activities and community outings. The aim of WOW is to be a project which has visual presence in the city promoting female activities and issues, working alongside the Bangladeshi Centre and its other work.
Dementia Research Project
Working with Sunderland University and Sunderland Clinical Commissioning Group, centre staffs are undertaking research into knowledge about and perceptions of dementia within the black and minority ethnic communities in the City. This work is being undertaken in order to inform Bangladeshi community of the issues faced by dementia sufferers and those who care for them so that we can deliver effective support and training for carers and family members based on a better understanding of the problems they face.
