Founded in 2014, the Jalalabad Association of America, Inc. is a non-profit (501(c) organization for people originally from the Sylhet region of Bangladesh, specifically the Jalalabad area. “Jalalabad” honors Hazrat Shah Jalal, a revered Sufi Muslim figure in Bangladesh.

Based in New York City, The Jalalabad Association of America has six core values: unity, inclusiveness, honesty, integrity, respect, and accountability. These values guide the association’s mission to promote the well-being of Sylheti people living in the United States.

The association supports new immigrants from the Sylhet region by helping them integrate into American life. They offer various programs, including Education and leadership development, social development and community service opportunities, advocacy and leadership training, etc.

The Jalalabad Association of America also awards scholarships to deserving and talented students who are new immigrants from Bangladesh (when funding allows).

The association represents the broader Sylhet region, including Sylhet, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, and Sunamganj districts.

Activities of Jalalabad Association of America

  • promote the well-being of the people of the greater Sylhet region living in America
  • provide all kinds of support to the new immigrants from Sylhet
  • provide scholarships to needy and talented students
  • build partnerships with other organizations to spread the cooperation
  • organize advocacy, workshops, and outreach activities to help new immigrants
  • help members with affordable housing, tax filing, health care, job search
  • help find internship opportunities for bright and aspiring young Bangladeshis
  • encourage the community members to register as voters and take part in civic activities
  • collect donations in cash and kind to help people

The Jalalabad Association of America also organizes several events for its members:

  • Annual picnic: A fun social gathering held outdoors, typically during summer.
  • Iftar party during Ramadan: A meal to break the daily fast during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
  • Receptions, discussions, and cultural programs: These events can cover various Bangladeshi culture and heritage topics.
  • The association also holds regular elections to choose its executive committee, typically every three years.
