Founded in 2019 by the Bangladeshi community in Queens, the Astoria Welfare Society USA Inc. tackles food insecurity for low-income Bangladeshi families in Western Queens. With the support of volunteers, local Bangladeshi businesses, and community partners, the society provides essential food resources. The Society’s dedication to alleviating hunger has been recognized by organizations and city officials.
Astoria Welfare Society offers and plans to offer the following services:
- Delivers hot halal meals to seniors who are unable to leave their homes.
- Distributes halal food, essential items, and academic supplies to the Bangladeshi community.
- Provides food assistance during Ramadan and other festivals.
- Organizes toy drives during holidays.
- Offers refreshments at Bangladeshi community events.
- Provides disaster relief to those affected by emergencies.
- Offers temporary housing to individuals or families in need.
- Visits incarcerated individuals to provide support and resources.
- Visits hospitalized individuals to offer companionship and assistance.
- Collects and distributes clothing donations to those in need.
- Hosts community gatherings to foster connection and belonging.
- Offers guidance and assistance in applying for unemployment benefits.
- Helps individuals navigate workers’ compensation insurance claims.
- Provides information and resources on family allowance programs.
