Bondhon: Festival of Cultures 2017 will organized by BIPA. The youth Bangladeshi community will join in with American, Chinese and other ethnic communities to celebrate the cultural diversity of New York and entertain the audience with their cultural talents.

I Speak ‘Banglish’ – Bangladesh Art Workshop

I Speak ‘Banglish’,  an art workshop for Bangladeshi and South Asian Youth, will be held in Queens and Brooklyn, New York from May 2 to May 14. I Speak Banglish Workshop is specially designed for kids of Bangladeshi origin. Boys and girls age between 10 – 18 years can participant at the workshop. The workshop is organized by Shetu NYC, supported by Citizens Committee for New York City and co-sponsored by Bangladesh Institute of Performing Arts. The aim of the workshop is to explore issues of cultural history and identity through historical art, language, poetry, food and discussions related to issues of regional importance and relevance. Participants will have a great opportunity to showcase their artworks at the final exhibition!

Youth artists will explore their cultural identity and foster civic engagement stemming from their passions while addressing issues in their society. Participants will be invited to analyze poetry, visual and contemporary art to explore ways of impacting their community by creating visual work that speaks to shared values. The workshops will be facilitated by Sharmin Hossain, Director of the Bangladeshi Historical Memory Project. The workshop is free and no art skill is prerequisite skill set is not required.

Space is limited, registration requested.

Boishakhi Celebration, New York

Boishakhi Celebration, New York will be organized by Bangladesh Society in Queens, New York for Bangladeshi community. Members of the community will buy and sell Bangladeshi food and products. The event will be observed with traditional Bangladeshi food and cultural program. Vendors will furnish their stalls with clothing, jewelry, toys and other products. Lucky winners of Raffle draw can get Diamond Ring, NY-Dhaka-NY airline ticket, laptop, iPhone, tablet and other prizes. A traditional parade will be held at the Diversity Plaza at 4:00 pm. Children and adults can wear their traditional Bangladeshi dresses. The event is free and open to all.

Bangladesh Memory Project

The  Bangladeshi Historical Memory Project and the Queens Museum will observe Bangladesh Memory Project through political theatre, art, drama, music etc. in Jackson Heights, New York. This event is an opportunity for everyone to see the vibrant Bangladeshi community, its vibe, activities and resilience of Bangladeshi people in general. The event will have alpona by Amrin Zakaria, live painting by Shurmmi M; demonstration how to drape a saree, instruction about how to cook Bangladeshi cuisine with Jhal NYC. Bangladesh Memory Project will also include a live performances by The Feringhees, Zarrin Maisha and the Bangladeshi Historical Memory Project jatra troupe at 4 pm.

This event is free, open to the public, and family friendly!

Funding support for activities at Diversity Plaza are provided by the NYC Department of Transportation’s One NYC Plaza Equity Program. Activities are coordinated by the Queens Museum, NICE, Chhaya, and The Bangladeshi Historical Memory Project and DRUM.
