Tasher Desh by BIPA – Free drama event for all.

Tasher Desh or the Land of Cards is a dance opera by Rabindranath Tagore. The drama will be presented by students of BIPA (Bangladesh Institute of Performing Arts) to celebrate Bangla New Year. The opera is in English. Tasher Desh is satirical look at tyranny and control and celebrates freedom of speech and thoughts – a battle between new ideas and old tradition. This event is part of the Singing Wind: Storytelling from Around the world and supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

Tasher Desh by BIPA

The play is translated in easy English so that all kids can understand it. The play has been choreographed by Annie Ferdous. This production of Tagore’s Land of Cards takes a satirical look at tyranny and control and celebrates freedom of speech and thoughts – a battle between new ideas and old tradition. This event is supported, in part, by Council Member Brad Lander.

Dance Drama by BAFA

Bangladesh Academy of Fine Arts, commonly known as, BAFA will organize dance drama ‘Chandalika‘ of Rabindranath Tagore. Written in 1938, the theme of Chandalika is female desire in an untouchable girl. The play is the realization by a chandal (untouchable) girl that she is a human being like others, and that it is a mistaken on her part to think herself beneath the notice of human beings who belong to upper castes. The drama is directed by Anup Kumar Das. The event will also showcase local Bangladeshi talents and vocal artists.
