Documentary Films on Bangladesh – Part 9

Non-fiction, special interest, or documentary films on Bangladesh by non-Bangladeshi filmmakers covered issues like microfinance, climate change, poverty, population, prostitution, child labor, ready-made garments, women, intermarriage, shipbreaking, travel, etc. Still, hundreds of real stories on various subjects are waiting to be told. Some independent Bangladeshi filmmakers started making documentary films very slowly, although the numbers are painfully low and limited.

Most documentaries on Bangladesh-related issues were made for foreign television, international organizations, and general audiences and were shown outside of Bangladesh. Nine films are included in this list of documentary films about Bangladesh. As mentioned earlier, the list of documentaries is all created by non-Bangladeshi documentary makers. Some are feature-length, some are short, some are old, some new, some available, some not, some won the award, some just there. This list is an effort to keep a record of them. The Chronicles of Nadiya

Two-part series in which The Great British Bake Off 2015 winner Nadiya Hussain explores the recipes that have shaped her love of cooking.

Part 1: Nadiya Hussain visits her family village near Sylhet in northeast Bangladesh. She shares her favorite recipes using local produce and techniques, including baked fish with green mango chutney and halva called thoosha shinni. As she cooks, she reveals the roots of Bangladeshi cuisine. When invited to a relative’s wedding, Nadiya bakes a three-tiered pumpkin celebration cake for the bride. She may have thought twice about this decision if she had realized the only available oven would be in an industrial bakery. This trip is also a chance to reconnect with family Nadiya has not seen since her own arranged marriage over ten years ago, and it proves to be a moving trip down memory lane.

Part 2: After spending a week with her family in Sylhet, Nadiya cooks around Bangladesh and learns more about the country, its people, and its food. In the capital city Dhaka, the Great British Bake Off winner spends time with a charity that delivers school meals to deprived children before learning about an ancient fishing method in a small Hindu village on the Padma river banks. As her journey continues, she meets and learns from food entrepreneurs and experiences a side of modern Bangladesh she never knew existed.

Thirty Million

Thirty Million examines the threat posed to the people of Bangladesh by rising sea levels. The country is considered the most vulnerable in the world to climate change and is predicted to lose 17 percent of its land by the end of the century, displacing 30 million people.  The documentary was made to give the people of Bangladesh a voice and show people in the West how what happens there will affect people. According to filmmakers, the amount of people who could be affected is almost ten times the amount of people who have fled Syria during its crisis, and the Pentagon has tagged the issue as “a major threat to global security and peace.” The United Nations Development Program and the Global Environment Facility funded the film.

To Our Credit explores an exciting new strategy to combat poverty: microcredit,  known in America as microenterprise development. It is extending small loans and other support to low-income people to help them create their employment. Microcredit is a dramatic departure from traditional charity or welfare programs: money is loaned, not given; repayment is required; interest is charged. In a world where capital is king, the effect can be remarkable.

Part One: Bootstrap Banking and the World profiles microcredit with stories from Bangladesh, South Africa, Bolivia, and India. Within the past decade, 15 million people have received microloans. Small Change, Big Business revisits loan recipients a decade later, studying the long-term effects of microcredit in their households and their Islamic community. King for a Day is a satire on globalization and its implications for the citizens of developing nations. When the president of the world’s wealthiest nation decides to spend 12 hours in the capital of one of the world’s poorest nations, the build-up to the visit is perhaps far more important than the day itself.

Okul Nodi (Endless River) is a contemplative documentary film about Bhatiyali or Bhatiali, Bangladesh’s river music. Bhatiyali is the soulful music sung by the boatmen of Bangladesh, as tradition has it. The lyrics’ poignancy often rests on dual meanings wherein boats become bodies, lovers are also lost gods, and river banks stand for cycles of life and death. The melody, with its tonal variations, carries the listener into the natural world by creating the sensation of drifting along the water. The documentary tries to find the history of this musical form and its relationship to the landscape. The documentary explores the opinion of a passionate group of experts, the effects of modernization on folk traditions, and open dialogue about what it means to be Bengali. Mirroring the complicated yet fleeting relationship between the songs and the landscape and calling attention to the intrinsic qualities of the cinematic form itself, Okul Nodi explores a disjunction between expectation and experience.”

Die Frauen der Kisani Sabha (The Women of Kisani Sabha) is a documentary about Bangladesh’s landless women. Landless women in Southern Bangladesh have organized themselves in a grassroots organization called the Kisani Sabha. They have occupied over twenty chars of alluvial islands in the Tetulia river. They live together with their families. Their enemies, a coalition of influential land brokers and large landowners, regularly send their musclemen to terrorize and expel the people from the chars. The eyes of the Kisani Sabha women light up as they narrate how they have used brooms, sticks, sharpened arrows, and bullets made from burned mud, forcing the enemies to take to their heels. The women fight in the front – men have to stand behind. We met women who spoke openly and with courage, voicing incisive and intelligent criticisms of a government that ignored their concerns. In moving images, they told the story of their life on the chars – under a wide-open sky in the river.

Chittagong is Bangladesh’s second-largest city and the heart of the country’s lucrative ship-breaking industry. Russia Today investigates appalling working conditions and human rights violations in the ship-breaking yards. With no health and safety provisions or proper training, employees are constantly at risk of severe injury and even death.

Fatalities occur frequently, and victims’ families are unlikely to receive compensation of any kind. The maritime scrapyards are closely guarded, and access is denied to media and researchers. Because the local and national governments are heavily involved in the business, they have little chance of improving their conditions.

A documentary on the Munda people living south of Bangladesh, bordering the Sundarbans’ forest. At the edge of the Sunderban forest in Bangladesh, inhabited by the royal Bengal tiger, a tribal group imported from India about 200 years ago to clear the forest and cultivable land. Over the years, the lands that were allocated to them in exchange for hard work ended up in the hands of the Hindu and Muslim neighbors, so the Munda survive in very precarious conditions, including the threat of the tiger that sometimes assails their villages. Bangalees view them as uncivilized. Shrimp farms have taken rice in the last twenty years, severely damaging the local ecosystem. Since 2003, their living conditions have improved thanks to an Italian missionary, Father Luigi Paggi, who, with the help of the only graduate of the tribe, launched a few schools, built five new villages after the cyclone Aila in 2009, and gave education to several girls saving them from early marriage, which often end with the death of the first child and the mother. These girls are educated and willing to fight for a better future, along with several tribe youths proudly rediscovering their culture, which is a sign of hope for the Sundarban Munda and beyond.

Wasfia – Short Doc

Wasfia – Short doc on Wasfia Nazreen – the first Bangladeshi woman to climb the Everest and the first Bangladeshi to scale the Seven Summits. The documentary  was made on 2016 by Sean Kusanagi and will be shown in Oakland, California as part of 2016 Women Sports Film Festival.

Since its birth, Bangladesh has produced more than 2100 films until 2015 but film genre wise they are exceptionally limited. Most of the movies in Bangladesh are some variations of drama. Therefore, other categories of filmmaking are almost absence or neglected. The documentary is one such genre. It is not appreciated, not popular, not promoted, not known. So far, most of the important documentary films on Bangladesh on various issues are made mostly by non-Bangladeshi film-makers independently or as a part of a project for foreign media. Some of the documentaries are now extremely difficult to find. This list is an effort to keep a record of them.

Eight docs are included in this part of documentary films on Bangladesh – as already mentioned, they are all made by non-Bangladeshi documentary makers. Some are feature-length, some are shorts, some are old, some new, some available, some not. The list is in random order. The role of United Nations peacekeepers is a true “mission impossible,” dropping soldiers who literally don’t speak each other’s languages into foreign countries rife with chaos and violence. Anything that goes wrong can become an international incident. Good luck.

A Journey of a Thousand Miles: Peacekeepers acquaints us with the personal side of such a mission, focusing on five Muslim policewomen from Dhaka, Bangladesh who are part of a unit sent to maintain peace in the wake of Haiti’s devastating 2010 earthquake. Their training is inadequate, to say the least. Adding to the volatile situation are the local perceptions that the UN has overstayed its welcome, and that foreign troops are responsible for the cholera epidemic that has been killing Haitians by the thousands since the earthquake.

Academy Award winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Saving Face) teams with filmmaker Geeta Gandbhir to follow the peacekeeping unit not just over the course of the year-long mission, but also through their return home, where they face fresh challenges of reintegration. Many of the women are the primary earners in their families, but they still encounter opposition from husbands and parents over leaving home for work. As the film takes us deeper into their lives, we come to feel the emotional toll of a risky and gruelling year abroad, away from children and loved ones.

Muslim women are often kept at a distance in the Western media. This film offers a rare and up-close look as they make the best of a difficult situation, with compassion and humour, while the mission expands their sense of what’s possible.

Throughout the last century, Christianity has grown dramatically in the 10-40 window. In Bangladesh, as Western colonies faded into history, young, dynamic leaders came out of Islam and into the Church. Bolstered by strong fellowship and an outspoken witness, Muslim-background Christians planted churches, started schools, translated resources and grew into a vibrant, visible, Christian church. But something else was lurking in the shadows.

Under the guise of contextualization, colonialism has evolved. Western missionaries are encouraging new believers to keep their faith ‘inside.’ Baptized Christians are going back to the Imams and back to the mosques. Rather than identifying themselves as Christians, they are calling themselves Isai or “Jesus” Muslims. Bibles are being produced that are omitting references to God as Father and to Jesus Christ as the Son of God. It is an idea that turns the gospel upside down, reversing what the Bible means when it calls people to turn to Christ and out of darkness and into the light.

No simple diatribe against accommodation, Half Devil Half Child calls the church in the West to remember who it is in Christ, a new creation that requires a wiser approach to missions and better use of our material blessings. This film challenges our taste for the comfort, ease and safety we enjoy. It identifies what drives a movement that creates invisible Christians for an invisible and ineffectual Church, to the glory of Islam. It is a call to recapture for the West what has been known for millennia – that the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church. It reminds us to let our light shine before men that they may see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven.

Opposed by Muslims and these “insider” Western approaches, faithful men, called from Islam to Christ in His one and only church continue to plant churches, preach the Gospel, train new leaders, and love their enemies. Through the story of one boy’s childhood, “Mass-e-Bhat” weaves the narratives of 6 children growing up around Bangladesh into an epic tableaux of a nation in flux.

As social worker, Nasir, wanders the alleyways of Dhaka’s Korrail slum, searching for working children to enroll in school, he recounts the story of his own childhood and his journey through a rapidly developing country.

A typical child of Bangladesh, Nasir grew up in the village before leaving at the age of 8 to pursue a better life in the city. Like so many others, rather than streets paved with gold, he finds himself working on a rubbish dump before being pulled into the workhouses and garment factories which sparked the country’s rapid growth.

As he reflects upon his childhood and his eventual struggle towards education, we meet series of children, through short observational chapters, who’s lives mirror his past while telling a story all too real in the country’s present. From Emon, a young boy scraping out a living in the rural areas and Shujon, an 8 year old working on a sprawling rubbish tip in the nation’s capital, to garment worker Riham and a pair of youngsters living on the platforms of Dhaka’s train station, we see life in a developing nation through the eyes of it’s children.

Bangladesh, the world’s eighth most populous country. While its problems may seem removed from the rest of the world, its military provides the biggest share of UN peacekeepers globally, earning billions for the government. Well known as a nation of endemic poverty and rampant corruption, it’s also a country born of a bloody war with Pakistan, enduring what one high US official called the most calculated thing since the Nazis in Poland. “At the time, it was the most horrendous genocide since the Second World War.” Shahriar Kabir Now an Islamic state like Pakistan, the country it fought for independence from, minorities are under threat; and crimes against them are rarely punished, like the war crime perpetrators over thirty years ago. Not only religious minorities but the little known indigenous population in the Chittagong Hill Tracts face violent attacks, urged on by extremists. Yet despite its human rights violations, the country still receives European and international aid.

In the Islamic country of Bangladesh, films are primarily made for an audience of lower-class males. On the one hand, the actresses are adored by the spectators as stars, but on the other hand, from their religious persuasion most people can only feel contempt for these ‘fallen women‘. Not surprisingly, a normal life as a respected member of society and marriage is almost unattainable for an actress. In TÄTHI, director Richard Solarz follows the realization of a Bengali feature film, with the young Swedish Lisa in the leading role. The film, about the relationship between a Western woman and a Bengali man, is alternately shot in Bangladesh and Sweden. The trip exposes many prejudices and cultural differences to the cast and crew of the film. Lisa is embraced as a new star in the poverty-stricken Bangladesh, but the way she and her female Bengali colleagues are treated by the male filmmakers and co-actors is not always respectful. The double moral standards and the resulting dilemmas are painfully unveiled when the producer of the film falls in love with the actress Shangita. He proposes to her, but attaches the condition that if she agrees she will immediately have to terminate her acting career. A condition she is forced to accept; for her, this is the chance of a lifetime. In this way, TÄTHI not only portrays the film industry of Bangladesh, but also questions the subordinate position of women in this country, constantly relating the two subjects to the situation in Sweden.

In Sweden the name of the documentary is ‘Stjärnan’.

Rasheda Begum is a respected and well known entrepreneur far beyond the region of Modukhali (Bangladesh). She became solvent thanks to tireless work and her good instinct for business. Back in the eighties, Rasheda’s family lived in extreme poverty. The only cash income came from Rasheda’s husband Ali, who worked for a pittance as a laborer. When government officials came to the village and offered the first micro credits, Rasheda saw her chance. With her first micro credit she bought 20 square meters of land and started a tree nursery. Until now, neither setbacks due to flooding and drought, nor ruthless business practices from commercial banks or extortionate rates of interests from money lenders, could slow her down. Her children went to school; her living situation improved. All is well, but not quite: There are still village leaders, who complain about Rasheda Begum’s success; her two oldest girls didn’t get their high school diploma, the oldest son dropped out of school, and the bank is demanding payment of a credit, or else….!

‘The Rasheda Trust’ shows the stages of development and the daily routine of the entrepreneur Rasheda Begum, who rose from nothing and holds her ground in a male dominated world.

This turns out to be easier said than done. The marriage negotiations do not progress very smoothly, floods ravage his native land, and his Italian employer shows little understanding for his long absence. But when he returns to Rome with his bride, the true challenges await him. Filmed in an unemphatic but intimate manner, Licu’s Holidays becomes a probing sociological exploration of a widespread dilemma for immigrants: which culture should these newlyweds use as a basis for their relationship in their new homeland? The images of a woman locked up at home make you fear the worst, but her desire for freedom leaves you feeling optimistic.

The Blockade documentary is a story of how Quaker and Jewish activists along with Bangladeshi expats shed light on the Nixon administration’s covert support of the genocide in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) in 1971. Equipped with just canoes and paddles, the young activists risked everything to stop the shipment of arms and save lives half the way across the world. These activists had worked closely with MLK and have used non-violent resistance in the decades since to bring about change….. And they are still going strong.

It is sad that the Royal Bengal Tigers (Panthera tigris tigris) of Bangladesh are in decline. In a recent report, it has been suggested that Bangladesh may have 100+ tigers left instead of 440. Over the last 100 years, hunting, habitat loss, prey depletion, forest destruction and climate change have reduced tiger populations drastically. Today, it is estimated that there are fewer than 2,500 Bengal tigers left in the wild in Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Bhutan. Indeed, all species of tigers are considered endangered.

Apart from being the national animal of Bangladesh and happily exist in the Bangladesh Cricket Team logo, the survival of Bengal Tigers of Bangladesh indeed a constant struggle. One recent danger was due to an oil spill in the Sundarbans area. Then poachers are still a big threat, tigers are killed in retribution as a result of general human-tiger conflict, negative attitudes towards tigers among local people etc. are making the situation even worse.

A film was released this year that touches these issues. Tiger Tiger – a documentary by George Butler – follows Dr. Alan Rabinowitz, a world renowned big cat conservationist, as he travels through the tiger habitat he has never before seen. Like the tiger he faces his own diminishing timeline. Diagnosed with leukemia, Alan makes what may be the last expedition in his long career in search of the last wild tigers of the Sundarbans. Set in one of the least-known landscapes left on earth, the beautiful Sundarbans forest, Tiger Tiger is the story of a man with numbered days seeking to save an animal whose days may also be numbered.

The documentary follows Alan as he explores the relationship between local people who live on the margins of the forest and the fearsome, but threatened predator. Alan visits the Indian side of the Sundarbans where tiger and human coexist relatively well and tiger habitat is carefully monitored. In contrast, Bengal tigers are less secure in Bangladesh side. Environment, economy, ignorance and stigma all are working against the tiger population of Bangladesh. Here is a snapshot of what is at stake:

But the documentary, Tiger Tiger, focuses more on the bigger picture – not only the peril, also the possibilities – how to save these rare, mystique, gorgeous, majestic animals in its natural habitat. Few remaining tigers are indeed fighting for their lives with the smartest predator on earth – human – the only predator who can also save them from total extinction.

In a sense, Tiger Tiger is more of a spiritual film than conservation or environmental related film. It has been shown many places and won some prestigious awards. Is there a way, the film could be shown in Bangladesh? There are other films available on Bengal tigers (Swamp Tigers, 2001; Man Eating Tigers of the Sundarbans, 2009). How hard is it to make an arrangement to translate/dub these films in Bangla and show on Bangladeshi TVs, schools and local communities to create a greater awareness and seek support!

After all, what is Bangladesh without Bengal Tigers! Who will love them, save them if it is not the people of the same land? Tiger Tiger is a compelling story – “a dying man is trying to save a dying species.” What about you Bangladesh?

Fictional film industry in Bangladesh is dominant, dramatic, distorted and surreal but still profitable. Therefore, non-fiction films or documentaries are neglected. Also the genre is not popular. Documentaries made by Bangladeshi filmmakers are rare, however, some new generation of independent filmmakers are trying to change the scenario. We will cover that story in another post.

This short feature tells the story of how a group of more than 30 boys and girls, many of whom are poverty-stricken street kids, are making a difference in their community and how the surf club they started is the catalyst for this change. Due to a fearful, conservative culture, the ocean was once deemed off limits to these children, who now see surfing as a source of fun, escape, and even a way to make a living. The film follows professional surfer Kahana Kalama (A guest on Fuel TVs series On Safari) as he works with Hawaii-based nonprofit Surfing The Nations and learns that sometimes surfing involves more than catching waves.

Gum for My Boat won the people’s choice award at the 5 Point Film Festival in 2010.

CBC’s the fifth estate won International Emmy for ‘Made in Bangladesh’ documentary. A similar short documentary was broadcasted on Al Jazeera – Fault Lines with same name in 2013 which won a Peabody Award.

Kashish 2012 was held from May 23 to May 27, 2012 in Mumbai, India, and featured 120 films from 30 countries

The film talks about a range of masculinities and its impact on people’s lives, and about how different people have unique experiences of coping and surviving in Bangladesh, often ruled by strict masculinist and patriarchist ideals. The stories of those who challenge these strictures and notions are told in this film in their own words.

In northern Bangladesh exists an ephemeral group of islands that are locally known as ‘chars.’ For an estimated 3 million people without room to settle on the mainland, the chars are home. Everything here is transitory and difficult in a land challenged by climate change. Agricultural land appears, then disappears. The average char islander moves 12 to as many as 40 times in a life. Ten years ago, an NGO named Friendship began to provide health, education and community infrastructure using boats. The NGO is led by a Bengali woman named Runa Khan. A Boat for Bangladesh was triggered by the arrival of a new boat in the Friendship fleet -Greenpeace’s iconic RAINBOW WARRIOR 2, which extends Friendship’s reach to the Bay of Bengal.

The companies promise the consumers that they will act as responsible members of the global society, protecting the environment and ensuring good working and living conditions for the workers. Nothing could be more wrong. Western consumers have turned to Fairtrade because Fairtrade/Max Havelaar guarantees that the workers in the Fairtrade-certified tea estates get a little extra money every time they buy their tea. This film tells the true story of how Fairtrade is not at all fair.

The Bitter Taste of Tea is the 3rd documentary of Flip the Coin series. The other two docs in this series, ‘The Micro Debt’ and ‘A Tower of Promises,’ also discussed issues related to Bangladesh. The film is sold for distribution in 10 countries and has won ‘The Al Jazeera Film Festival’ and the FAO ‘OSIRIS’ award.

The fifth episode takes Simon through Bangladesh and on a difficult covert journey into Burma, where Western journalists are banned. In Bangladesh, Simon sails down the mighty Padma River and visits fishermen who use trained otters to drive fish into their nets. Further, he sees the river banks crumbling before his eyes – increased river erosion is thought to be caused by global climate change – and in the capital, Dhaka, he meets some of the millions of child workers. From North East India, Simon treks through jungles and across rivers into Burma to meet the Chin people – an ethnic group who are brutalized and oppressed by the Burmese government.
